VI International Conference on Adult Education.

Belem, Brazil, 16-22 May, 2009.

Since 1949 UNESCO has organised five International Conferences on Adult Education (CONFINTEA). The last one, hosted by Germany in 1997, led to the adoption of two documents: The Hamburg Declaration on Adult Education and the Agenda for the Future, which acknowledged that learning and adult education are key instruments to tackle current social challenges and world development.

CONFINTEA V, supported on other current trends, was a turning point for the development of significant policies on Adult Education in several parts of the world.

CONFINTEA VI intends to renew at a worldwide level that impulse towards learning and adult education in order to build knowledge-based economies and societies.

Regional Preparatory Conferences have taken place in each of the regions (Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Europe, North America and Israel and Arab States) in order to achieve this objective; the conclusions have been validated in Regional Synthesis Reports gathering their challenges for the future.

Moreover, on the occasion of CONFINTEA VI, from May 16th to 18th, 2009, the International Civil Society Forum (FISC for its Portuguese acronym) will be held in Belém, Pará, Brazil. This is a plural space for reflection and formulation of proposals that seeks to promote the exchange of experiences and organize the process of incidence in the VI International Conference on Adult Education.
