Environmental Education: local reflection for a global change. Socrates 1996.
The aim of the project is to develop a didactic action that foments the education for values. The action will be developed through sensitisation activities about topics and questions of common interest for European citizens.
Environmental education transcends the local context, generates a collective awareness and overcomes political barriers as it shows the ecological common frame of the European context. It also binds reflection and individual actions to the social and collective transformation.
Education, as a long-life human activity, and education centres, as institutions open to the environment, must take an active part in the fulfilment of these objectives. The purpose of education is to favour and promote attitudes that contribute to the improvement of life quality and social well-being.
The objectives of the project were:
- Know the environmental problems, not as the sum of isolated problems, but as the result of the synergy resulting of the interaction of all those problems.
- Develop the value of environment as a common benefit and daily responsibility.
- Create a local and planetary awareness based on the solidarity of all people.
- Defend biodiversity and cultural and linguistic diversity, that is, the richness of the European diversity.
- Analyse how a local action may have a global impact.
- Increase the responsibility of governmental actions: the different political and economical programmes establish controversial actions which have a direct impact on the common environment.
- Promote the exchange of ideas, experiences and governmental and non-governmental actions in the European scope.
- Implicate and provoke the participation in problem-solving actions.
- Promote respect towards environment through different life habits.
The result of the project was:
- A teaching module made up of three didactic units globalised so as to be implemented at the different
- A teacher’s handbook which contains guiding for the implementation.
The project was published by the Spanish Socrates National Agency, as part of the collection “The best European Education projects 1995-1999”.
